East Kent Training Hub has collaborated with MedStart4U on an initiative designed to inspire the next generation to pursue a career in medicine.
Over the last year, more than 140 school students from across Kent have experienced what it's like to work in medicine through taster days as part of the MedStart4U programme. For the first time, this year East Kent Training Hub has joined up with the initiative to deliver three days providing a strong focus on careers in primary care.
MedStart4U is aimed at students in year 11 and 12 and is run by Medical Education at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT).
As well as collaborating on the MedStart4U days, East Kent Training Hub helped enable the development of a work experience week (MedStart Plus) with placements in primary care. Over the course of the year, 89 students were offered work experience in primary and secondary care.
The collaboration has been a huge success in terms of inspiring young people to consider a career in primary care. The initiative also offers an opportunity to EKHUFT medical students and training doctors to develop the skills to mentor and teach school students.
